Staying fabulous at 50+

Shopping & Ranting

Hello lovelies, well as some of you know I have been suffering a bit this week with a tooth abscess, this combined with lack of sleep, too much work and life in general has not been very good for my mood.  On Monday I had the choice whether to work or not and because I was in quite a bit of pain I elected not to work and go and do a bit of shopping instead.

This may have been a big mistake, when I arrived at my chosen shopping centre after a 40 minute drive I was met with a 30 minute queue to get into the car park.  I was tired because of lack of sleep from tooth pain, I was starving as I had planned to eat on arrival and I was desperate for the loo.  I soon as I was parked I sprinted to the nearest ladies facilities, which happened to be in Debenhams, the only place in the shopping centre that has a MAC counter.

Now, a few weeks ago I read Bicky's blog and she did a FOTD using the 'Girl About Town' lipstick, I knew that I had to own this and so off I went to the MAC counter.  For once it seemed fairly quiet and I could see 2 sales assistants.  So I approached one of them and asked if I could have a look at the lipstick, she said 'they're over there' and pointed to the lipstick stand, I said 'well I know the name of the lipstick but I'm not exactly sure what it looks like as I have only seen it in a photograph', she said 'the names are on the bottom of the lipsticks', I said 'yes I know that but would you just be able to show me which one it is please' she replied 'I'm actually busy at the moment so you'll have to look yourself', (she was actually putting lipstick on another sales assistant) at that point I advised her that if she wanted to continue in her career as a sales assistant she may need to brush up on her customer service skills and then I flounced off.  I was absolutely fuming, I mean was this just me lacking in a bit of patience because I wasn't feeling too well, or is it that as a middle aged woman I have no right being at a MAC counter let alone trying to buy anything, or is it because some sales assistants just do not have the customer service skills that I expect.

After flouncing out of Debenhams I remembered how hungry I was so I made my way to Pret, I always go to Pret when I am in this shopping centre and I always have a Soya Latte and Porridge made with Soya milk.  So in I go starving and annoyed,  hubby went off to find a table and I headed to the counter with a chicken salad for him and I ordered 2 Soya latte's and the porridge, the sales assistant said 'you can't have porridge' I said 'why not', he said 'because it's after 10.30am' I replied 'well it's not as though you have to cook it is it, you just need to add milk to it' he said 'you still can't have it'.  At that point I almost turned into Michael Douglas in the film 'Falling Down' I ranted about how do they know what time people have their breakfast  and don't have big signs on the premises telling me I can have porridge and then tell me to my face that I can't have porridge, I told them where they could stick there porridge, their Latte and their salad and flounced out of there too.

By this time I was feeling like an over-tired child about to go into full temper tantrum mode.  After eventually having something to eat and drink and calming myself down I got on with the task in hand, which was to buy foundation.  Now a few weeks ago Stina did a hauling blog post about a free gift that Boots were offering when you purchased 2 Estee Lauder items.  Can you imagine how distraught I was when the sales assistant told me that the offer had now finished.  I didn't say anything but I think she took pity on my crestfallen expression and suddenly remembered that she still had a few gifts left and would happily let me have one if I purchased 2 products.

So I purchased my usual Double Wear Foundation in Pale Almond and in the absence of the 'Girl About Town' lipstick, I purchased the Signature lipstick in Brilliant Pink.

estee lauder free gift with purchase

These are the goodies that I got for free, a full sized blusher compact containing blusher, bronzer and shimmer powder, a full sized lipstick in Tiger Eye, a mini Sumptuous mascara, a mini lip pencil in Spice and  3 skincare items.  If you can find a friendly sales assistant in your local Boots and you ask nicely I'm sure you'll find that this gift may still be available.

After a traumatic start to my shopping trip I went home happy with my purchases but very annoyed that I had reacted the way I had.

The moral of this story must be don't go shopping if you're tired, in pain, hungry or you're older than 25 and want to buy something from MAC.

  1. Oh Jude I'm absolutely PMSL at this post, largely because you remind me so much of myself and exactly how I'd react in such situations. Absolutely love it - and so glad that you were rewarded at the end of the day with those beauties! I got the blush from ebay & it's really pretty. xx

  2. Strawberry Blonde, I can't actually articulate how angry I was, I was nearly in tears with rage but once I'd calmed down I was on the verge of tears of laughter at my reaction. As I've got older my tolerance levels have got lower and lower. I'm going to have to start shopping online before I get issued with an ASBO lol xxx

  3. Awww bless you hun so glad you got the gift set in the end.

As for MAC I swear 99% of the sales team take tests in how to be a rude bitch. I've had them do that kind of thing to me. Email debenhams directly and complain.

Hope your tooths better too now.

  4. Ms Red I think not getting the gift would've pushed me over the edge! what is the problem with these MAC assistants, in America they are lovely and bend over backwards to help you. Tooth is being extracted tomorrow, I have never been more desperate to get to the dentist, it may help improve my mood :) xx

  5. I had a similar experience at MAC - not once was I acknowledged and I was there for over 20 minutes (more fool me..) As a MAC virgin I was after some advice and was ready to purchase a blusher.

I gave up in the end.

I am Pale Almond too :-)

  6. You should deffo communicate your dissatisfaction to the companies concerned...how else will they improve? I used to be silent and inwardly seethe.... not good! Now if something irks me I express it in writing, often my comments are gratefully received and if not at least I feel better! Just last week I got a £5 gift voucher and a day travel pass for expressing my opinion (I don't call it complaining;-) ) on sandwich bags I couldn't fit a sandwich in and the fact that it took me nearly 2 hours to make a 10 mile bus journey! Show your teeth! :-D

  7. @Bettina, I only ever have these problems at MAC, thank god the Estee Lauder SA's have more manners I couldn't live without my Pale Almond xx

@cactusjo I think you have a point and that the only way to deal with poor customer service is to actually make a complaint, if we don't then how can we expect it to improve. Thank you for your comment :)

  8. Wow those are amazing freebies! :) Estee Lauder always has great offers. never tried them though.

I've had a bad experience with a MAC employee.

  9. @Vintage Estee Lauder do the best free gifts don't they. I can only assume then that every MAC counter in the country has at least one ill mannered sales assistant sadly. xx

  13. @adoreabubbles I am feeling so much better with almost everyone commenting about the awful customer service from MAC SA's, I'm glad it's not just me, maybe we should all start complaining a bit more xx

  16. Gad what an ordeal. I mean trying to buy a MAC product, problem teeth are a walk in the park in comparison! In Selfridges at Trafford Centre the Illamsqua stand is opp the MAC stand and when I talk to the SA's on the Illamasqua stand they are lovely, realy helpful & friendly and yet so many of them claim to be ex-MAC SA's??! How does that work, does crossing that 5 foot of floor space alter your personality so totally or is it in fact a MAC ethos to be a PITA?! Any road up, I would have done exactly as you did, nose off to spite face in pret too, exact same thing! Hope the dentist is done and dusted nice and quickly and you feel way better soon. x

  17. Thanks hun, I have never purchased anything from Illamsqua but I always stop and chat to the assistants as they are so friendly and I love asking them about their make up looks. I think I will save my MAC shopping until I go to America later this year, the SA's are much nicer there xx

  18. It goes to show the difference when SAs go that extra mile. I can't stand it when sales staff are unhelpful- I'm not asking for a favour, it's their job!

  19. @skin deep My thoughs exactly, I wonder how many sales they miss out on because they make themselves so unapproachable xx

  20. Please don't hate me for saying this but this is just a perfect example of how shit customer service is in this country. Asking for something is an inconvience! You'd never know we were in a recession if they are happy to let people walk off without buying anything!

Glad you got sorted in Boots hun. I would have gone postal too!

  21. @Skin Scrubs I totally agree with you. When I worked as cabin crew I used to be in the USA a couple of times a month, I did all my shopping there, including grocery shopping in Walmart, the customer service is amazing, whereas in this country it is absolutely shocking most of the time. I cannot understand why people go into retail if they are not customer focused xx

  24. Oh gosh you poor thing! I know exactly how you would have felt - I'm actually a paid mystery shopper so this is just awful to hear about your experience. A similar thing happened to me today in Harrods, I had had a huge day was famished and all I wanted to do was check out some La Mer skincare - 3 staff doing absolutely nothing! So I walked off towards the exit the man in the suit asked can we help you with anything I bitchily replied you might have... and I added your lucky I'm not working today - as I am a mystery shopper and you would have all failed!!

  25. I loved this posting. We all have those days. Next time you go to MAC, I'd have a pen and notebook at the ready and write down the name of the associate/s, the date and time and send in a complaint to both the store and the company via their website. I'm a great believer in being the squeaky wheel.
