Staying fabulous at 50+

Skin Care Affair Part 2

I first posted this in January. Since then I have tried many new skin care products so I decided to update the post.

I have spent more than 30 years looking for 'the one' and during that time I have had dalliances with budget skin care,  flirted with high end products and I've had a few long term relationships but 'the one' is still eluding me.  Am I too fussy?  Are my expectations too high?  Am I  commitment phobic?  Or am I just a skincare slut?

I was a skin care virgin until I was 15 years old, I remember my first encounter like it was yesterday, the white and blue bottle of Anne French Cleansing Milk seemed so sophisticated and grown up, I thought we would be together forever but our relationship was over within a few months. I then met Johnsons Baby Lotion, we stayed together until I was in my late teens as this removed make up and moisturised.  When I started buying grown up magazines I discovered I could do much better for myself and dumped Johnsons for Clearasil, our breakup was not as painful as the breakout this product caused.

I then moved to Germany for 7 years and had several relationships with products whose names I couldn't pronounce, sadly none of them lasted more than a few months.  I moved back to the UK and got back with Johnsons for a while but again this didn't last, although I must confess we still have the occasional one night stand!!  Then Glamour magazine was launched and changed my life, I discovered Clinique and Clarins and on occasions I was seeing both at the same time, sadly neither of them could truly satisfy me and although I was happy for a while I just couldn't commit myself to either.  I watched the launch of Liz Earle on QVC and thought that's it, that's 'the one', I loved all of the products immediately and we were together for a couple of years, but I was lured away by Decleor and Gatineau, although Cleanse & Polish still pops in and out of my life.

I then trained as a beauty therapist, this was a revelation for me, it opened up a whole new world of relationship opportunities.  The first salon I worked at used Espa products, I was in heaven, this range treated me very well and when I left that salon I was heartbroken at first but then I was introduced to Elemis, I thought I had found my soul mate at last, I thought this is 'the one'. We had 2 very happy years together, then disaster struck, I became an air hostess and my skin care affairs went international!  I had liaisons with Korres, Estee Lauder, Kiehls, Chanel, Molton Brown, Prevage, Ren, Biotherm, and Bliss to name but a few, but I loved and left each and every one of them. I then entered the world of blogging, oh my, I was in skin care heaven, so many products, so little time. I have had encounters with so many brands in the last 6 months and this has fuelled my inability to remain faithful. I have been lucky enough to try some fabulous brands of skin care that otherwise may have slipped under my radar had it not been for my blog. One of the brands that has a special place in my heart is Pai, this brand will always be waiting for me when I have been let down by a product that promises everything and delivers nothing. I am currently in a very intensive relationship with Alpha H, so far it is going very well, although I am beginning to get very distracted by a couple of other suitors that are waiting in the wings to be reviewed.

I got to thinking recently about why I found it impossible to remain faithful, is it because these products fail to deliver, have I got some sort of undiagnosed medical condition or am I just a skin care slut?  I have been really lucky to be blessed with very good skin, the majority of people who do not know my age would guess I am younger than I am, is this because of good genes or because over the years I have always taken good care of my skin, despite my inability to have a monogamous relationship with one brand?  I don't know the answer to this question but I do know that my quest to find 'the one' goes on, so until then I guess I shall continue to be a skin care slut and I'll have a blast with any new brands that find their way into my life.

I would be interested to know if you have found 'the one',  what skincare products can't you live without and have you found one that will be with you forever.

Yes To Cucumbers Face Wipes and Face Mask Review

I really like the 'Yes To....' range of products.  They are perfect if you are just dipping your toe into skin care and ideal if you are doing skin care on a budget.

Now I have to confess I am not a fan of face wipes, even in an emergency I am loathe to use them, so I was hesitant to try the Yes To Cucumbers face wipes.

*Apologies for library pictures, camera malfunction at time of review

Yes To Cucumbers Face Wipes

Although, I felt a little better about trying these knowing that they are 96% natural, Paraben, Petroleum and SLS free.  The wipes themselves are nice and thick, so no ripping as you pull one from the packet, they smell nice and fresh and not at all synthetic and actually feel quite gentle on the face.  I needed 2 wipes to remove all of my make up and I was quite surprised that my skin did not feel tingly or tight after use.  Although I am not going to change my mind about face wipes totally, I'm never going to be a fan, I would use these again if I was in a situation where cleanser was not available.  I  used about 10 out of the pack and gave the rest to my daughter, she absolutely loved them and has since replaced her usual wipes with these.

Now, lets talk Face Masks.  I'm a bit fussy when it comes to face masks, I can't see the point in using a lovely cleanser, expensive exfoliator and then using an inferior mask.  (I will talk about my favourite face masks in a future post).

Yes To Cucumbers Calming Facial Mask contains Dead Sea Mud, Organic Cucumbers and Aloe Vera.

This face mask looks like a typical clay mask, although it smells fresh and feels a lot lighter than some I have used in the past.  I plastered on a thick layer after cleansing and exfoliating and read a few blogs for 15 minutes.  During this time I could feel the mask setting but not to the point where it was really tight and at cracking point.  The mask was very easy to remove with a warm flannel, unlike some mud masks, this had not dried to the point where I had to literally pick it off my skin.  My skin had a lovely pink glow to it and I noticed that the enlarged pores around my nose looked very clean and somewhat smaller, my skin felt really clean and hydrated.  I was quite impressed with this mask and as a budget buy I can't really fault it.

The full range of Yes To Cucumbers range are available at Victoria Health and retailers nationwide.

Nosh Detox 3 Day Juice Fast Review

When I was asked if I would like to trial a 3 day detox I jumped at the chance.  I have been feeling a bit lack lustre for a while now and contemplating looking at my diet and lifestyle etc.  I work long hours and shifts and this means I usually eat something purchased from a late night garage.  Prior to the job I'm in now I worked as cabin crew, this is when my eating habits really changed, even though I hung my wings up 3 years ago I have never managed to get back into a healthy eating regime and as a result, in 3 years I have put on around 3 stone in weight.

A detox seemed the perfect way to start to get things back on track.

I was very impressed with the way Nosh Detox emailed me several times prior to the Detox beginning, I was sent a client form to complete, I was sent inspiring emails to prepare me for the next 3 days, I was sent an email to inform me that everything I needed for the next 3 days would arrive by courier at 10.00am on Friday.  On Friday at 09.45am the courier arrived with a huge box containing smoothies, tea, tea filters, bath salts, body brush, castor oil, Nux Vom tablets and instructions.

Nosh Detox 3 Day Juice Fast

Instructions that apply to each of the 3 days.

Everything you need for your 3 days of your Detox Juice Fast.  The only thing you have to provide is the 3 litres of water that you need to drink each day.

Day 1 was quite easy, the smoothies are very thick and quite filling, the only thing I struggled with was the tea, I just couldn't fall in love with the taste so I only managed a couple of cups.

Day 2 was a different story.  I woke up with a thumping headache and I was starving.  On a daily basis I drink lots and lots of tea and coffee and I think the headache was a possible withdrawal symptom of my body craving caffeine.  I really struggled with the smoothies on day 2, although they all tasted really nice I was craving food and something hot.  My headache lasted all day and I was feeling thoroughly miserable.

Day 3 I woke up minus a headache, I had also had the best night's sleep I'd had in a long time, I felt rested but energised, if that makes sense.  I still wasn't loving the teas but I drank as much as I could.  I managed the smoothies much better on this day and that coupled with the water meant I had no hunger pangs either.

You also continue to get inspiration emails to encourage and support you.

I enjoyed using the body brush and bath salts, there is a different one for each day.  What I didn't enjoy was the Castor Oil, this is something that I haven't come into contact with since I was a child, all I have to say about it is 'yuk'.

So apart from the Tea and Castor Oil the only other thing you need to be aware of if you do this programme is the extra time you spend in the bathroom, all that water and all that fresh juice really does cleanse your system.

I am really impressed with this 3 Day Juice Fast, it was easy to fit in around my normal life, although day 2 was tough I am so glad I stuck with it.  This has really set me up to start a healthy eating regime, I feel motivated and ready to take myself to task and cut out all of the rubbish in my diet.  Over the 3 days I got into the habit of having a smoothie at certain times of the day, I am hoping to now do this with food.  As scales are banned from my house I don't know how much weight I lost, I know I have lost some weight and I certainly don't feel as bloated.

Please pop over to www.noshdetox.com where you can learn all about how and why this company was started and the different programmes that are available.  There are some absolutely fantastic testimonials on there.

Schwarzkopf Osis Dust It Texture Review

I have seen these styling powders in the shops and hardly ever paid them a cursory glance.  I imagined that they were for stylish, funky, short haired people who washed their hair once a month!

When I was sent this to review I confess to leaving it on my dressing table for a few weeks, picking it up occasionally, squinting to try and read the miniscule instructions on the pot and then putting it back where I had got it from.  Then at the weekend I finally decided to give it a go and see what it was all about.

Dust It Texture is a styling powder giving a soft matt effect, control and volume.  The more you apply the more volume you get.

My hair can be a bit flat on top so I sprinkled the powder around the crown area, the powder disappeared immediately on contact, I then basically just ruffled my hair, to my complete amazement the texture of my hair completely changed and it looked as though I'd had a severe back combing!   I was horrified, I couldn't get a brush through my hair, my hair was stuck in mid ruffle on top of my head and I had no option but to wash my hair, it took 3 washes to even get some sort of lather going on and to eventually wash the product out.

Once my hair was back to it's normal flat self I looked at other reviews of this product on-line and realised immediately that it was me that was at fault and not the product, I had apparently used enough product for 10 heads of hair, this would explain why my hair ended up high enough and hard enough to use as a battering ram at a smash and grab, I bet this is the product that Jedward use to get those gravity defying quiffs

Schwarzkopf Osis Dust it

Anyhow, back to the dressing table I went and this time I sprinkled a very small amount of product on my crown, I ruffled a little bit and ended up with a pleasing amount of volume that I was able to mould to give my hair some oomph just where I needed it.  The volume that you get is basically there until you wash it out.  I would imagine that this product is indispensable if you have a very textured hairstyle.  For me, I would use it when I was going out to get that volume at the crown.  Even when using a small amount, this product does take a double wash to get the product out.  Absolutely perfect product for an up-do.

Myroo Skincare May Chang Polishing Body Scrub Review

Don't you just love a body scrub that does what it says on the jar?

May Chang Polishing Body Scrub from Myroo Skincare is one of those little gems you come across every now and again and you think 'where have you been all my life'!

Myroo is a new independent skincare company that use only natural ingredients.  The products are free of Parabens, SLS and Palm Oil.  All their products are hand made.

May Chang Polishing Body Scrub is made with Organic Shea Butter, Sea Salts and Vitamin E.  It is described on the website as smelling of Lemon Sherbet, I can definitely vouch for this, it is like a little jar of sunshine.  The texture is just like a Lemon Slush Puppy.

Myroo May Chang Polishing Body Scrub

Myroo May Chang Polishing Body Scrub

This body scrub is mixed to perfection with the right of amount of scrub to oil.

Now I cannot be doing with a pathetic scrub, I like a scrub that scrubs, this one certainly does the job.  As there is the right amount of oil/salt a little product goes a long way and you get a really satisfying exfoliation.

The smell is definitely addictive and I'm pleased to say that this aroma lingers for a long time after use.  Skin feels 'polished', smooth and moisturised but not oily or greasy.  I love the product and I will be purchasing the Mint Tea scrub next.

As well as scrubs Myroo also has a range of Bath Soaks, Bath Fizzes and a Baby Range.  I will certainly be stocking up on some of these products for Christmas gifts.

Green People Intensive Repair Shampoo & Conditioner Review

I don't know about you but I never put any thought into my hair care products.  I colour my hair every 4 weeks and I buy whatever shampoo is on offer. I have very fine hair but lots of it, and although it is colour treated I didn't think it was in bad condition.  I have to wash my hair every day as I'm lucky enough to get a visit from the hair fairy every night so my hair resembles a burst mattress every morning.

When I was offered the chance to try some hair products from Green People I jumped at the chance.  I put a lot of time and effort into looking after my skin, I check the ingredients thoroughly before putting anything on my face and I thought it was about time I afforded some of this attention to detail to my hair.

I was sent the Coloured & Treated Kit to try.

What they say...... This natural duo helps to strengthen damaged hair and enhance shine.  These products do not contain SLS, SLES, Parabens, Artificial Perfumes, Phthalates and colourants.

The foaming agents in the shampoo come from corn and coconut.  Some of the other ingredients it contains are Green Tea, Aloe Vera, Pineapple extract, Rose Geranium, Sandalwood, Lavender and Orange.

The main conditioning agent in the conditioner is Jojoba Oil, it also contains seed extract from Mandarin, Bergamot and Sweet Orange.

What I say......The shampoo is clear and I could immediately smell the Geranium.  I was very surprised at how well this shampoo lathered, once rinsed my hair felt very strange, I then realised that in the absence of silicone and the usual chemicals in shampoo this is how my hair should feel.  The conditioner is a lovely lightweight lotion and again I could really smell the Geranium, this conditioner combed through my hair like a dream and rinsed away easily.

Once dried my hair had a lovely shine to it and I could smell the Geranium all day.  I used these products daily for 4 days and my hair just kept getting better and better.

Then on the morning of day 5 a miracle occurred, I kid you not.  I got up and went into the bathroom with then intention of doing my daily wash, I looked in the mirror and was amazed, my hair looked the same as it did when I went to bed!  I was not sporting the burst mattress look, my hair was smooth, shiny, no greasiness, no static, no sticky up bits, I could not believe it, a quick run over my fringe with the GHD's and I was good to go.  I though that this might be a one off and that I'd just had a good night where I hadn't moved once in my sleep.  But I'm happy to report that since using these products I now wash my hair every other day and have even left it until day 3 if I'm not working.

I can't tell you how delighted I am with these products, I never thought that changing to Organic hair care products would have such an impact on my hair.

Konjac Sponge Review

Back in April I read a blog post from the wonderful Get Lippie all about Konjac Sponges.  So intrigued was I that I popped straight over to the Konjac website and purchased the French Red Clay Sponge Puff.  There are several sponges to choose from and I chose this one as it was recommended for my skin type.

What they say......

A fabulous deep cleansing, gentle exfoliating, facial sponge with French red clay. This  is similar in properties to French green with the color difference being attributed to a higher presence of iron oxide. Red clay cleans out the skin from the layers of dead keratinized cells and it accelerates the regeneration process. It is said to improve blood circulation and makes the skin look radiant, and hydrated, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and broken capillaries. So perfect for dryer or mature skin that needs rejuvenating.

What I say......Wow is what I say.  This little sponge is amazing.  The first time I used it I just ran it under warm water and then used it all over my face after cleansing, initially I thought it just feels like a normal sponge, but after using it my skin felt like it had never felt before, it had a sort of velvety feel to it, like I'd been to a salon and been exfoliated to within an inch of my life.  I was amazed that such a strange looking little sponge could have such an effect on my skin without much effort on my part.  I have used it with my cleanser but to be honest I prefer to use this as my second cleanse without cleanser in the evening and  I use it every morning without cleanser.

This is what my sponge looks like after 3 months  of using twice a day

Konjac Sponge

This is what it looks like when it is dry

Konjac Sponge

As you can see there is a loop of thread attached to the sponge and after use I just hang it on the tap to dry.

These little bundles of magic retail for £5.25 - £5.75 and are worth ever penny.

I heard a twitter rumour that they are launching a body sponge in September, I can't wait and I'll be at the front of the queue for one of those.

Why not pop over to the  Konjac Sponge Company website and learn all about the origins of this fabulous product.

Connock London Wonder Balm Review

I am a real fan of Connock London products, but I am an even bigger fan of multi purpose products.  I love the challenge of seeing how many uses I can find for one product.

Connock London Wonder Balm is right up my street.

Wonder Balm contains Kukui Oil, Monoi, Cocoa Butter, Mango Butter and Beeswax.  It hydrates, soothes and moisturises dry skin, it also calms irritated skin.

Wonder Balm is made with 100% natural ingredients.

Connock London Wonder Balm

Connock London Wonder Balm

First things first, I really like the packaging of this product, all too often balms come in pots so small I struggle to actually get my finger in the pot, this is absolutely ideal and when you eventually get to the bottom of the pot there will be absolutely no wastage.

Secondly there is a very light, pleasant fragrance, not at all overpowering.

Finally what can you use this balm for?  Well to be honest you are only limited by your imagination.  I have used it on cuticles, cracked heels, a dry patch of skin on my back, as a lip balm, eyebrow tamer, fly away hair, sun burnt ears on my cat!  See what I mean, it's one of those products that you will use each and every day for something on someone.  It truly is a Wonder Balm.

Now I know you will probably be thinking £18.50 for a balm is a bit steep, but I photographed the balm above on Saturday, I have been using it for about 6 weeks and as you can see I have hardly made a dent in it,  I reckon that even using this balm several times a day I am going to get at least 6 months use out of it, that works out at about 7p a week, absolute bargain for such an all round product.

Batiste Tropical Dry Shampoo Review

I don't know anyone that doesn't love Batiste Dry Shampoo.  I have 2 daughters and all of use this product and there are cans of this stuff in every room.  We have various colours, fragrances and sizes.  This product has been a saviour for me as a shift worker and I always have a mini can in my handbag in case of 'flat hair' emergencies.

The latest addition to the Batiste family is the Tropical, with Coconut and Exotic Fragrance.

Batiste Tropical Dry Shampoo

This works exactly the same as all of the other Batiste products but the fragrance is very summery.  The fragrance is not as powdery as some of the others.  This is a light, fresh fragrance that gives you that just washed freshness.  I love the fact that this comes in the larger can and it is a firm favourite in my household.

Pupa Breast & Decolleté Anti-Age Treatment

I look after the skin on my face, neck and hands, but I'm ashamed to say that I neglect the rest of my body.  I have the occasional guilt pang, usually after I've caught a glimpse of myself in a full length mirror whilst getting dressed, then I make all sorts of pie crust promises to start exfoliating and moisturising my body on a more regular basis.  In all honesty I start off with good intentions but these fall by the wayside very quickly as I use the excuse that 'I don't have time', the truth is I don't actually make time.  When I was asked if I would like to try this new product I decided I would try it for 2 reasons, the first being that it treated an area of my body that I have concerns with and secondly I was hoping it would encourage me to get into a routine with body treatments.

What they say......

Pupa Breast & Décolleté Anti-Age Concentrate £42 (50ml). This is the first time advanced anti-ageing technologies for the face has been applied to the breasts and cleavage, delivering a multi-action treatment that helps reduce the appearance of pigmentation marks and is both anti-wrinkle and anti-sagging.

Pupa Breast & Décolleté Anti-Age Concentrate is perfect for women over 40 years old.  Its Anti-Age Botanic Complex boosts collagen and elastin to smooth ‘morning lines’ and improve skin tone. Lumiskin brightens and diminishes the appearance of pigmentation marks and sunspots, while the precious, natural extracts of Quillaja and Kigelia Africana get straight to work from the first application smoothing out lines and plumping the skin.

For best results, use morning and evening for eight weeks. To maintain results use once a day.

Pupa Breasts & Decollete Anti-Age Treatment

What I say......

Well yes, as a woman of a certain age I do have 'morning lines', pigmentation and redness on my chest area, on the rare occasions that this area is on show I tend to use a tinted moisturiser to cover up the above problems.  I was worried that I would not be able to commit to the twice daily application of this product but I have been using it religiously for the last 3 weeks and I have to say I have noticed a definite improvement in that area.  I still have 'morning lines' but within an hour these have usually diminished, the pigmentation marks are much less noticeable and the general area looks smoother and more even toned.

The product itself is a gel like cream, it absorbs very quickly and has a very pleasant fragrance.  I found when I first started using the product that I needed 3 or 4 pumps of the product, I now use 2 pumps, I think this is because when I first started using the product my skin was so dry and neglected.

Now, there are a lot of ingredients in this product, it also contains parabens.  Here is a list of the ingredients.

There is a warning that this product should not be used during pregnancy.

Santaverde Skincare Review

I absolutely love trying products from a range I have never heard of before, even better if the products are natural and organic.

Santaverde is a German brand made with Organic Aloe Vera grown on their own Organic Plantation in Andalusia.

The products contain 100% Active Ingredients and 0% Water.  That's right, these products do not contain any water.  The main ingredient in all of the Santeverde products is the pure juice of of the Aloe Vera plant (Aloe Barbadensis Miller)

Unlike water, the pure plant juice is full of a wide range of biosubstances from the fresh Aloe Vera leaves, essential amnio acids, enzymes, mineral salts, vitamins and antioxidants.  All of which are valuable and effective in caring for the skin.

The products contain only pure plant oils and a minimum of essential plant additives.  The products do not contain mineral oils, synthetic fragrances or any other additives, that may beautify the cream, but not your skin.

Santaverde Aloe Vera Creme

What they say......

Nourishing day and night care for normal and sensitive skin The light, nourishing cream made of pure Aloe Vera juice supports the cell renewal and optimizes the moisture balance of your skin. Valuable oils from grape seeds, avocados and kukuinuts protect your skin and preserve elasticity and suppleness. The light cream calms skin that tends to redness and gently smoothes.

What I say......

This cream comes in Light, Medium and Rich.  I was sent Medium to try, which is for Normal/Dry skin.  My skin is a bit hormonal at the moment and varies from dry to oily.  This cream is very rich and only a small amount is required.  It has a beautiful, clean fragrance, not perfumed as such, just a nice non medicinal clean smell.  Because this cream is so rich if you use too much then you're going to have to wait a while for it to absorb, so with this product less is definitely more, unless you have exceptionally dry skin.  It makes a perfect base for make-up and it also helped to soothe and take the redness out of my forehead after some slight over exposure to the sun.

Santaverde Extra Rich Beauty Elixier

What they say......

Santaverde Elixir supports cell regeneration and strengthens skin elasticity. The smooth composition of 100 % pure and certified organic seed oils nourishes intensively, supports the natural regeneration of your skin, encourages the natural collagen production and increases elasticity. Intensively provides dry, sensitive and mature skin with nutrients and antioxidants and leaves it noticeable protected, supple and smoothed.

What I say......

This Beauty Elixier is super rich, if you have oily/combination then this oil is not for you.  At the moment I have dry/combination skin.  I played around with different application methods and here is what works for me.  I use this product as a night time treatment, I use one drop of Elixier and apply to my neck, I then use one drop of Elixier mixed with the Aloe Vera Creme on my face, this application works perfectly for me and my skin the following morning looks and feels really hydrated.  I have also started using a drop of the Elixier mixed in with my regular face mask for an extra hydrating boost.  It also makes a fabulous hand treatment, just one drop under your hand cream before you go to bed, my hands look 10 years younger the next morning.

Overall I really like these products.   The Elixier will be a staple part of my skincare routine.

Please visit www.amarya.co.uk for more information on this product range and for a limited period only you can obtain a discount of 20% off any of the products in the Santaverde range by using the discount code SABJ20 at the checkout, they also offer free P&P on all orders to the UK.
